This series of multiples was made directly as a result of working on ‘Toy Stories’. The narrative of this performance lecture starts by setting the context of where I live and work – a shed in my mum’s garden. This predicament is probably the result of a lifetime of an idealistic approach to making art where; for good or bad I’ve managed to consistently avoid being very commercial. After one particular ear bashing from my girlfriend to think about money I decided to make a series of tongue in cheek art pieces that could also serve as merchandise for the show Toy Stories while it toured.
There’s a persistent theme running through the show of trying to come to terms with the world of ‘post truth politics’ via the medium of toys. The production had to be simple to keep them affordable but I also think this simplicity resonates with the subject in its directness- A cathartic reaction to the frustration of listening to mercurial politicians. A symbolic toy stuffed into the point of origin of the emanating lies. As I point out on stage, my work persistently dwells in a grey area between the ‘unreal and the real’. My friend Keith said that instead of putting them on the mantelpiece... .“I’d like the idea of someone buying that then throwing it throwing it through their window” |
I arrived at a price of £40 trying to keep them within the realm of an impulse buy after a performance, So far I've sold nothing but I have had some interest on social media so I'm faced with the ludicrous prospect of sending bricks through the post.
Made from genuine bricks I've found in my mum's garden. All enquiries contact me via email or any social media. |
