I bought a small box of model railway workers at a car boot sale and took them with me. I bought them mainly because I knew I could make one or two of the figures in boiler suits match up with real people working in Antarctica. However the figure in this image was an unexpected bonus. It was a waiter for a railway restaurant car. On the B.A.S. ship there was an officers mess that was served by waiters in the same uniform. When we docked at Rothera, Nick kindly modelled for me on the deck in front of the glacier as the ship was being unloaded.

I painted these model railway figures to look like members of the crew whilst they worked on the deck below. When they noticed what I was doing they went back inside and changed their clothes to make it more of a challenge for me.
