Trying to illustrate the news in 2020 with Scalextrix toys - A reassuring, nostalgic and therefore comforting toy from my childhood. Pretend plastic people for the new British era of 'post truth politics', 'fake news'; 'polarised opinion', 'conspiracy theories' and ultimately 'confusion leading to tedium' or a sense of disempowerment as a lot of people disengage with politics altogether. Maybe making people disengage with politics was actually the plan... although,... come to think of it,... that does sound just like another conspiracy theory.
The letter in the film was the one sent out by Boris Johnson to every household in the country at the start of the first Covid 19 lockdown. It was something 'written down in black and white'; something that felt 'solid and real' and therefore less mercurial than what came out of Boris Johnson's mouth.
In the news at the time Covid deaths had past 40,000; protesters in Bristol had torn down a statue of the slave owner Edward Colston and Dominic Cummings had been forced to call an outdoor press conference at number 10 after he was caught breaking government Covid restriction rules. Up until this point there was a perception and a lot of debate on him being the svengali figure behind Boris Johnson's inexplicable success - the 'real' power behind the throne! His humiliation and subsequent departure made this reality look less plausible. In which case...who is pulling the strings?
