In 2016 I was part of 'Bedford Creative Arts' project 'Library as Laboratory'which was an experiment in re-imagining how the contemporary library could adapt itself to changing times.
Assistant Artist and photo shop wizard- Sebastian Ries Lloyd, Commissioned by Central Bedfordshire Council. Funded by Arts Council England and Central Bedfordshire Council
My approach started with a satirical look at advertising and marketing and I decided that formula 1 motor racing sponsorship was probably the most expensive and glamorous form there was. I then tried to find a way to associate this with the not so glamorous context of the library.
For each meeting I had with the organisers of the project I managed to arrive late. Each meeting was in a different library and each time I set off I underestimated how long it would take me to get there. My journey from Essex to Bedfordshire is one that's not catered for by any major road. There are two routes:- 1. The straight cross country route which means bisecting several major road arteries that head North to South or ,2. Going South and then North again along the unpredictable M25. Inevitably each journey was a frustrating experience.
Instead of advertising a product I eventually came up with a totally solipsistic approach and invented 'Selfie Slot Car racing'. In my mind it was a way of mirroring the dystopian experience of the world outside that we live in.
